Understanding GPS: A Brief Explanation
GPS, or the Global Positioning System, is a U.S. Space Force-operated navigation system relying on a constellation of over 30 satellites in Earth's orbit. These satellites broadcast signals containing their position and the current time. On the ground, a network of stations oversees their accuracy and health. When a GPS receiver on Earth picks up signals from at least four satellites, it can determine its exact location by measuring the time delay of each signal. While generally reliable, the system's precision can be influenced by factors such as atmospheric disturbances and the relative positioning of satellites.
